Just for information's sake, here is what I found happened with my 'other' space on my iPhone 5. Before the update roughly 4.5 GB, after the update roughly 1.5 GB, thus around 3 GB lost to so called other files.
Apple forces its customers to update their iOS to the latest version, unless the device is so old it couldn't handle it. The only critique is that we're not given a choice. Some people like the old look, some like the awesome speed of their original operating system when the device was bought. I've owned almost every single iPhone that came out and witnessed how consequent updates made my devices slower. A great example is the iPad 1, which with iPhone OS 3.2 flew, and which in its current iOS 5, I believe it is, is so slow it's painful to try to type in a URL into Safari after it launches.
